Encountering Vedanta

I recently took a short trip to St. Louis, to visit a friend at Washington University. I’d never spent time in St. Louis before, so we did the normal touristy things, seeing the local sights, the parks and trails, taking the old elevator to the top of the arch.

While leaving the University I noticed a small sign on a house the the edge of campus: “Vedanta Temple”. Aha! I had fortuitously stumbled across The Vedanta Society of St. Louis, one of the active Vedanta societies scattered across the USA

They were having a study session Sunday regarding the Upanishads, so I signed up and attended Swami Chetadananda’s talk.

How inspirational! I had not met the swami before, or any members of the vedanta society. I haven’t studied the Upanishads at all yet. But it seemed as though the ideas were passing right through my awareness and pointing at the infinite light just beyond the ego’s awareness.

Every time I encounter the teachings of advaita vedanta it feels this way.
